Abstract
1,165,015. Cleaning metals; modifying metallic surfaces. H. KENMORE. Nov.11, 1966 [Aug. 22, 1966], No.48792/67. Divided out of 1,165,014. Headings C7E and C7U. A wire of e.g. copper or steel is formed into a helix by the apparatus described in Specification 1,165, 014 and fed at a rate of at least 50 metres/min. through baths at least one of which is a cleaning bath. Subsequent baths may contain hot solutions of lime, borax or phosphate for coating the wire. In an example, wire passes through a scale breaker 13, 14 is fed to the helix forming device, and the formed helix is continuously fed along storage rolls 40, 41 below which the tank 50 is suspended. The tank is partitioned into several chambers which include a first pickling chamber, containing, e. g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, six water rinsing chambers, a chamber containing lime, borax or phosphate solution, and finally two empty chambers where excess liquid from the previous chamber is discharged. The water in the rinsing chambers is fed counter-current to the wire. The tank 50 is supported on rollers to allow it to be adjusted in position with respect to the helix.
