Abstract

116,429. Barnett, W., and Florendine, J. Sept. 25, 1917. Sweeping-machines ; taking up refuse for removal.-Relates to machines having a transverse rotary brush formed of a number of sections 1, 2, 3 connected end to end by universal joints carried by radius arms 6, 7, 8, 9, each of which is loosely mounted e.g. on a transverse shaft 5 on the machine framework 4 so that the brush sections can accommodate themselves to the contour of the road, whilst a hand-actuated transverse shaft 18 can be rocked to lift all the brush sections from the road surface if desired. According to the invention, all the radius arms carry extensions 16 which loosely engage arms 17 on the rock shaft 18 so that each section can automatically rise independently of the others. The radius arm 9 at one end of the brush shaft 10 carries the driving gear 11, 12, 13, 14. the pinion 14 of which is in constant gear with a pinion 15 on the frame 4. The invention may be applied to the refuse-collecting machine described in Specification 101,728.
