Abstract

1,163,083. Negative impedance network. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 27 Jan., 1967 [31 Jan., 1966], No. 4138/66. Heading H4R. A four-terminal network having a connection from each of one pair of terminals to a corresponding one of the other pair comprises a resistance and a negative impedance in series in one of the connections, a positive impedance connected between the two connections and a negative impedance connected between the two connections, each negative impedance being achieved by a negative impedance converter, and the relative values of the resistance positive, and negative impedances being sochosen that the image impedance of one pair of terminals is R whilst that of the other is Z 0 . The network may be used to interconnect functions of different impedances, e.g. loaded to non-loaded lines or for supplying gain. In an arrangement for matching a left-hand impedance R to an impedance Z 0 (Fig. 1) the series arms are R and - Z 0 and the shunt arms - 2R and 2Z 0 in parallel. The network is analysed with reference to Figs. 2-5 (not shown) and a # network for effecting the same matching is illustrated in Fig. 6. The converter the series circuit should be open circuit stable and the one in the shunt arm short-circuit stable. A known transistor converter suitable for voice frequencies is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown), and the connection of such converters is described with reference to Fig. 8 (not shown). An adjustable auto transformer may be included between the two shunt elements for the adjustment of gain.
