Abstract

1,162,238. Non-catalytic chlorination of paraffins in the liquid phase. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 21 Nov., 1966 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 52105/66. Heading C2C. Chlorinated paraffins, e.g. C 10 -C 14 monochloro straight-chain paraffins, are obtained by a liquid-phase process which comprises (1) feeding chlorine gas diluted with an inert gas in a volume ratio of 0.5:1 to 10:1 and a liquid paraffin to the foot of a tubular reactor containing packing material, (2) maintaining the temperature in the reactor at between 70‹ and 150‹ C. and the pressure at a value such as to prevent boiling of the paraffins and (3) removing the liquid reaction product and recycling a part of it to the feed stream in such a quantity that the chloroparaffin to paraffin molar ratio in the feed is from 0À5:100 to 8:100. The discharge gases can be freed from the last traces of chlorine by scrubbing with a fresh paraffin charge. Specified packing materials are balls, saddles or rings of an inert material such as glass and specified inert gases are nitrogen and hydrogen chloride.
