Abstract

1,158,358. Pipe coupling. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 28 June, 1968, No. 30863/68. Addition to 1,133,412. Heading F2G. In a synthetic plastic pipe coupling socket as described and claimed in parent Specification 1,133,412 wherein the socket has an inturned lip 6 defining an internal annular recess housing a resilient rubber sealing ring 7 held in place by an uncompressible synthetic plastic locking ring 8, together with an uncomprossible blocking ring 13 between the locking ring and lip to prevent expulsion of the sealing ring under test pressure, the sealing ring has a head 9 extending along and in contact with the surface of an inner portion 3 of the socket, which is of smaller diameter than the said recess, and having one or more inwardly-projecting circumferential sealing ribs 10, 11, preferably of semicircular crosssection, adapted to sealingly engage the end of an inserted spigot 12. The socket inner portion 3 is joined to the socket portion 2 defining the recess wall by a tapered wall portion 4 and, as shown, rib 10 lies within the portion 3 whilst rib 11 lies within the portion 4 and serves to stiffen the head 9 against collapse under endwise pressure from inside the pipeline. The coupling socket may be formed at the end of a pipe length having a spigot at the other end or at one of a sleeve having a similar socket at the other for connecting plain ended pipes. Embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) illustrate sockets having differently shaped recesses, and locking and blocking rings.
