Abstract
1,157,574. Reconstituted tobacco; food compositions. ROTHMANS OF PALL MALL Ltd. 26 Oct., 1966 [27 Oct., 1965], No. 48064/66. Headings A2B and A2C. A polymeric mass containing a substantially uniform dispersion of a fine powder is produced by mixing the fine powder with a combination of a long chain polysaccharide, the sugar molecules making up the polysaccharide having two adjacent carbon atoms bearing -OH groups in cis configuration relative to each other and optionally also a carboxyl group, and a solution of an electrophylic compound which will complex with the -OH groups in the polysaccharide, and the fine powder is thereby occluded within the three dimensional polymeric lattice so formed. The fine powder may be food for humans or animals, tobacco dust or an abrasive, but the examples are confined to the use of tobacco fines and converting the polymeric mass made therefrom into sheet form. Polysaccharides used are locust bean gum, guar gum, ethyl cellulose, and sodium alginate. The electrophylic compounds may be aluminium chloride, boric acid or borax. Where the polysaccharide includes a carboxyl group, a solution of a salt of a multivalent cation other than magnesium or ferrous iron may be included, and calcium citrate is exemplified; the use of sequestering agents is also specified. Other ingredients used in some or all of the examples are dialdehyde starch, titanium dioxide, propylene glycol, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
