Abstract

A typewriter having a proportional letterspacing escapement mechanism, which includes three pawls 4 1 , 4 2 , 4 3 , is provided with a backspacing operating lever 41 which through the intermediary of a rocker 36 actuates selectively arms 35<SP>111</SP> or lugs 35<SP>11</SP> on coupling levers 35, associated with the pawls, to drive one of the pawls in the carriage back-spacing direction and another pawl in the letter-spacing direction after initial disengagement of the pawls from an escapement rack 1 and to re-engage the other pawl with the escapement rack at the end of the back-spacing operation. Depression of a back-spacing key (not shown) displaces a push rod 41 away from its abutting surface 50<SP>1</SP>, so as to rock an arm 37 of a backspacing rocker 36 which lifts a bail 36<SP>1</SP> and allows pawl coupling levers 35 1 , 35 2 , 35 3 to pivot under the bias of springs 42 1 , 42 2 , 43 3 , about a pin 43 and to abut the pawls 4 1 , 4 2 , 4 3 . Displacement of the push rod 41 also causes displacement of the pin 43, mounted in a rocker 52, from its abutment surface 50<SP>11</SP> so that the pivoting coupling levers 35 1 and 35 2 engage lower steps 44 1 , 44 2 in their respective pawls 4 1 , 4 2 and the coupling lever 35 3 engages the upper step 45 in the pawl 4 3 in consequence of which lugs 35<SP>11</SP> 1 and 35<SP>11</SP> 2 or the associated coupling levers 35 1 , 35 2 are disposed in front of driving bail 36<SP>11</SP> of rocker 36 and the coupling lever 35 3 has its nose 35<SP>111</SP> 3 disposed in front of a driving bail 36<SP>111</SP> on the rocker 36. Continued anticlockwise rotation of the rocker 36 causes the coupling lever 35 1 to displace the pawl 4 1 by one tooth gap and effect back-spacing of the carriage with concomitant displacement of coupling lever 35 3 to the left. The latter pivots the pawl 4 3 whose slot edge 6<SP>1</SP> 3 abuts a pin 7, to disengage it from the rack tooth 3<SP>1</SP> and then to re-engage it with rack tooth 3<SP>11</SP> so as to hold the carriage in its back-spaced position. On release of the backspacing key the push rod 41 and rocker 36 are restored and the bail 36<SP>1</SP> disengages the coupling levers from the pawls.
