Abstract
1,150,396. Thermo-electric devices. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 12 Feb; 1968, No. 6890/68. Heading H1K. A thermocouple 12 comprises a pair of thermoelectric elements 16 and 18, of different noble metals, forming a junction 20 for insertion into a medium whose temperature is required to be sensed, and a pair of leads 24 and 26, of different metals, joining the thermocouple to its associated equipment. The junctions 22 and 28 between the lead conductors and the elements are arranged to be located near the sensing point such that during operation they lie in a region of such a temperature that the net E.M.F. generated in them is substantially zero. One of the elements 16 is formed of an alloy containing by weight 55% palladium, 31% platinum and 14% gold, and the other element 18 is formed of an alloy of 65% gold and 35% palladium. The negative lead 24 is made of an alloy of 95% nickel, 3% aluminium and the remainder silicon and manganese while the positive lead 26 is made of an alloy of 90% nickel and 10% chromium. The butt welded junctions 22 and 28 are insulated from each other by a magnesium oxide mass 13 retained in a stainless steel sleeve 15 in metal shell 10.
