Abstract

1,148,365. Remote handling apparatus. SOC. SIERSATOM. 10 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966; 23 June, 1967], No. 31612/67. Heading B4Q. [Also in Division F2] A mechanical handling arm for the remote handling of objects comprises a plurality of substantially identical sections connected in series wherein means are provided for pivoting one section with respect to an adjacent section with at least two degrees of freedom. As shown, each section comprises a male portion with a part-spherical outer surface 5 and a female portion with a partspherical inner surface 6b. Each pair of adjacent sections are interconnected by electric or fluid pressure jacks 13 equally spaced around the axis 2. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the jacks are omitted and each section is provided with three equally spaced cables which are secured at one end to the section and which pass through apertures in the other sections to a control device at the inner end of the arm. In further embodiments, Figs. 6, 8 (not shown), the sections are interconnected by universal joints and by jacks pivoted to lugs equallyspaced around the outer surfaces of the sections. The arm may be enclosed by a protective sleeve.
