Abstract
1,147,867. Fuel emulsions. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 July, 1967 [12 Oct., 1966; 16 March, 1967], No. 34857/67. Heading C5G. [Also in Division B1] A stable fuel emulsion having a yield stress of 800-3500 dynes/sq. cm. comprises as a disperse phase 75-99 wt. per cent of a liquid hydrocarbon boiling in the range 70-750 F., 0À5-20 wt. per cent of a polar organic liquid as the continuous phase which liquid is immiscible with said hydrocarbon, has a dielectric constant greater than 25 and a solubility parameter greater than 10 and 0À5-10 wt. per cent of an organic emulsifying agent. Hydrocarbons specified are gas oils, kerosene, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, Stoddard solvent, naphtha, benzene, xylene and shale oil distillates. Polar organic liquids specified are formamide, dimethyl acetamide, diethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, propylene carbonate, glycidol, ethylene glycol, dimethyl formamide, glycerol, formic acid, and mixtures of formamide and solid amides, e.g. urea, oxamide and guanidine. Water and/or a C 8 -C 18 fatty acid or alcohol may form part of the continuous phase. An extensive list of emulsifying agents is given which embraces polyglycols, polyglycol ethers and esters, fatty acid esters of sorbitan, N- alkyl trimethylene diamine dioleate, octakis- (2-hydroxypropyl) sucrose, condensation products of fatty acid amides and ethylene oxide, ethanolamine fatty acid salts, stearyl dimethyl benzene ammonium chloride, gums and sodium sulphosuccinates.
