Abstract

1,038,960. Sewing machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. Feb. 11, 1965 [Feb. 12, 1964], No. 5899/65. Addition to 920,552. Heading D1G. In a sewing machine for simultaneously connecting together a pair of superimposed fabric layers and forming an overedge seam on each of the two edges of the fabric layers, members positioned in front of the overedge seam needles for deflecting each fabric edge separately away from the needle producing the overedge seam on the other fabric edge are mounted on the looper carriers for the overedge seams. The machine is a modification of the machine described in the parent Specification. The connecting seam is formed by a straight needle 9 co-operating with a threaded looper 25 carried by an arm 24 rigid with a shaft 23 receiving oscillatory and reciprocatory motion. The overedge seams are formed by curved needles 78, 79 carried by respective oscillatory arms 76, 77 and co-operating both with respective threaded under-loopers 53, 54 carried by an arm 51 rigid with an oscillatory shaft 50, and also with respective unthreaded overedge loopers 41, 42 carried by an arm 40 rigid with a shaft 39 (not shown) receiving oscillatory and reciprocatory motion, the stitch length of the overedge seams being twice that of the connecting seam. The modification consists in providing an arm 51 an abutment 52 to deflect the lower fabric layer downwards in front of the leading needle 79 forming the seam on the edge of the upper layer, and an arm 40 on abutment 43 to deflect the upper fabric layer upwards in front of the trailing needle 78 forming the seam on the edge of the lower layer. Reference has been directed by Comptroller to Specification 998, 425.
