Abstract

1,038,868. Blasting. F. R. PALMER. Jan. 6, 1964 [March 20, 1963], No. 11050/63. Heading B3D. A portable appliance comprises a spray gun having a spray nozzle, through which a stream of abrasive can be emitted, and extending into one end of a duct or casing at the opposite end of which a stencil or stencils is/are located or adapted to be located, the spray nozzle of the gun being adapted to direct a stream of abrasive towards the stencil or stencils and being movable relatively to the duct or casing so that the centre of the stream of abrasive can be directed successively through different portions of the full width of the stencil or adjacent stencils located therein. A handle 8, 10 is connected to a flexible air hose 12, the air flow being controlled by a normally closed valve operated by a plunger 13, and has a portion 9 screw-threaded at 9a into a cylindrical component 14. This has an axial bore 14a terminating in an air jet 2 and a passage 14c leading to a space 14b surrounding the jet 2 and connected by a flexible tube 7 to a container 6 containing finely powdered abrasive material, e.g. fine sand or carborundum. The forward end of the component 14 is secured within a block 15 by screws 17, 17. A rubber sleeve 16 forms a spray nozzle. The block 15 is part circular in plan. A casing 4 of rectangular shape increasing in width from its rear end to its forward and has a plane top 18, a plane bottom 19 and sides 20. The inner faces of the rear extremities of the sides 20 conform to the curvature of, and provide a seat for, the block to which is secured in position in contact with the seat by axially aligned pivot screws 21, 21, whose common axis passes through the centre of curvature of the block 15. A rectangular resilient member 22 carried by the casing 4 provides an air-tight seal with the block 15. The casing 4 carries a handle 23. The bottom of the casing is formed with a circular flange 19b to which is secured, by a band 24 with tightening screw 25, the upper end of a canvas or like bag constituting the container 6. A resilient frame 27 secured to the front of the casing 4 has an aperture slightly deeper than the frontal opening of the casing. A stencil holder 28 is in the form of an apertured elongated plate, the upper and lower edges of which are turned over to define narrow channels and is a force fit within the aperture in the frame 27. Stencils 30 and spacer plates 31 have their upper and lower edges received in the channels in the holder 28. The top 18 of the casing 4 has a window constituted by a transparent sheet, e.g. of perspex, in a frame 33 retained by pivoted catches 34. In use, the appliance is held by the handles 8, 23 with the frame 27 in contact with the glass or like surface to be marked. The plunger 13 is then depressed so that a stream of abrasive material issues from the nozzle 3 and is directed through the stencils. The parts 8, 9, 14, 15 are swung relatively to the casing so that the full intensity of the centre of the stream is applied successively to the adjacent stencils, the window enabling the precise disposition of the stream to be observed. The spent abrasive falls through an aperture in the bottom 19 of the casing 4 to the container 6. The appliance may be used to mark the windows of a motor vehicle with the registration number or other identification as a safeguard against theft. Abrasive in suspension in a liquid may be used.
