Abstract

Foamed isocyanate reaction products are prepared by reacting a simple organic polyisocyanate (i.e. a monomeric polyisocyanate, its uretdione or isocyanurate polymer or a phosgenation product of a fomaldehyde-polyamine reaction product) with pitch or tar and causing a foam-forming gas to be formed. Other reactants, e.g. polyethers, polyesters or polyesteramides may be included in the reaction mixture. The tar or pitch may be derived from wood, peat, shale, bones, vegetable wastes and coal. In Example (1) coke oven tar pitch, crude diphenylmethane diisocyanate and tris-(b -chloroethyl) phosphate were heated together. Stannous octoate, siloxane, oxyalkylene copolymer, and water were added and the mixture allowed to form a foam. In Example (2) a foam was produced from the same reactants but by the " one shot " method.
