Abstract

Apparatus for handling moving continuous elongated materials, e.g. threads and ribbons, includes a surface for contacting the running material comprising a metal having a surface with smoothly rounded nodules with substantially no peaks, the roughness of the surface being of the order of 20-200 micro-inches. The surface may of a roller, a snubbing-pin which may be heated or a guide, and may be formed on a core of steel, copper or brass by elastoplating to a thickness of .0005-.050 inches after roughening by vapour-blasting.
