Abstract

An inhaling device comprises a nicotine-containing substance and means for heating this substance to a temperature at which nicotine vapour is given off. The device is preferably shaped to simulate a cigarette but, when heating is obtained by combustion of a suitable substance, smoke and other combustion products are not inhaled. In one form of the device a narrow bore tube 4, Fig. p 1 (not shown), of aluminium, containing nicotine extract or nicotine-enriched tobacco, is surrounded by combustible material 5, which may be tobacco, sawdust &c. treated with potassium chlorate or other substance to ensure continuous smouldering. When the tube 3 is thus heated, nicotine vapour is given off, condenses into aerosol form in a cooling chamber 2 and is inhaled by the user through a filter mouthpiece 6. Several other arrangements are also described and it is also proposed to obtain heating by using finely divided metal which oxidizes on contact with the air. Flavouring substances or other additives may be incorporated in the inhalant material.
