Abstract

1,033,594. Driving belts. GATES RUBBER CO. April 1, 1964, No. 13421/64. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division B5] Articles such as tyres and power transmission belts, cogged or of V section, Fig. 5 (not shown), are cast from a viscous polymerizable elastomeric material in a moulding apparatus which comprises a shell mould 15 and mandrel 14 held in spaced relationship by gravity, mechanical or magnetic means and mounted for rotation on a shaft 13, material being introduced through a pipe 17 to land on a plate 18 and from thence being urged into a vacuumized cavity 19 by centrifugal force. Air is withdrawn from vacuum chamber 11 via an exhaust line 16. Preferably the mould and cavity 19 are maintained at a raised temperature e.g. 200‹ F., to facilitate the flow of the material without, however, unduly increasing the rate of polymerization. The inner surface of the shell 15 is shaped to give the article its requisite profile and when reinforcing material 22 is used, Fig. 4 (not shown), this is wound in one or more layers on to the mandrel 14 which preferably has a corrugated profile 20, 21. Among reinforcing materials mentioned are fabric, natural or synthetic fibre, wire, cotton, or cords of rayon or nylon. In the case of cord-like material the mandrel 14 may be helically grooved to provide a seating therefor. Preliminary curing is carried out by removing the article, shell 15 and mandrel 14, heating them and removing shell 15 before curing is complete. The centrifugal action of the moulding process may be utilised to form laminated products by using a material having components of differing density so that e.g. a cogged belt may be formed wherein the cogs are of relatively hard material. Suitable polymerizable elastomeric materials are plastisols, organosols, liquid chloroprenes, liquid polysulphides, depolymerized natural rubber, silicones, epoxides, urethanes, carboxylated butadiene-acrylonitrile, polyester based resins and polyether based resins. Preferably the polymers are degassed before the polymerization agent is added.
