Abstract
1,027,779. Making capsules. J. A. GLASSMAN. March 6, 1964, No. 9735/64. Heading B8C. Multi-compartment capsules are formed by telescoping the closed end of a capsule cup into the open end of another cup after which the ends are trimmed to form a unit of H longitudinal section. The compartments are filled and capped in sequence. Three compartment capsules may be formed. Spray treatments for alkaline or acid resistance are applied to cause selective release of a compartment contents in a particular portion of the digestive system. Capsule shells 12, closed end uppermost, may be held in apertured discs 10 having ejectors 11, sprayed with a binder by a spray head 16 and then brought beneath a disc 25. The disc carries shells 26 which are telescoped on to the shells 11 by air pressure entering the pockets 30, Fig. 3. The ends of the double shells produced are trimmed and the resulting H elements 46 rehoused in the disc 10 and brought beneath a head 36 for spraying with a resistance inducing liquid, e.g. formalin. The capsules may then be subjected to a drying process to limit the depth of the resistant skin. Only part of each element is so treated. The elements still in the disc 10 are brought beneath conventional filling means, capped, reversed, filled and again capped. Alternatively further H elements may be telescoped over one end, filled and capped, Fig. 10.
