Abstract

The invention comprises N-acyl-urethanes of the formula:-R.X.NHCOOR1, wherein R represents an aliphatic radical, R1 is the residue of an aliphatic polyhydroxy compound containing 2 to 14 hydroxyl groups and X is a carbonyl or sulphonyl radical, and their preparation by reacting an aliphatic polyhydroxy compound containing 3 to 15 hydroxyl groups (e.g. a polyalcohol or sugar) with an aliphatic carboxylic acid chloride and/or with an aliphatic sulphonic acid chloride and with an alkali metal cyanate in dimethylformamide at a temperature of up to 160 DEG C.
