Abstract

1,024,698. Seals. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 2, 1965 [March 3, 1964], No. 9032/64. Heading F2B. A seal is made of such material that, when under fluid pressure, it can achieve precise sealing conformity with a surface to be sealed by a combination of elastic deformation and plastic deformation, but, upon reduction or release of fluid pressure, it can return to a free clearance condition by virtue of the relaxation of the elastic deformation alone. The material may be a lead or tin alloy or lead coated with P.T.F.E. The seal is arranged in a recess of a rotary or reciprocating member, its axial length being shorter than the axial length of the recess to allow fluid pressure to enter behind the seal and urge it radially outwards. The seal may be cylindrical or U-shaped in cross-section.
