Abstract

1,022,167. Laminates. DIXON CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1962 [Sept. 28, 1961], No. 36241/62. Heading B5N. A continuous layer of polytetrafluoroethylene is laminated to a metal surface by first priming the metal surface with a discontinuous layer of P.T.F.E. in the form of a powder and then bonding the continuous layer of P.T.F.E. to the primed metal surface by the application of pressures of 200 to 300 p.s.i. at a temperature of 600-800‹ F., allowing the laminate to cool under pressure. The metal surface may be preroughened, e.g. by sand-blasting, scratching, etching, &c. The P.T.F.E. layer may be in the form of a self-supporting film or a fabric coated or impregnated with P.T.F.E., or may be supported by a temporary backing sheet. The layer may contain fibrous or granular fillers, e.g. glass fibres, or metal oxides. Suitable metals are aluminium and its alloys, iron, steel, copper, nickel, bronze, brass, silver or gold. The P.T.F.E. may be applied to one or both sides of the metal sheet or may be sandwiched between two metal sheets. The laminate may be used for the manufacture of cooking utensils, electrical apparatus, bearings and the like.
