Abstract
Benzene and naphthalene are obtained from an aromatic feedstock boiling in the range 200-600 DEG F. and containing alkylbenzenes and alkylnaphthalenes by subjecting the feed to a first hydrocracking step which effects cracking of non-aromatic hydrocarbons without effecting dealkylation and operated thermally at 1000-1100 DEG F., 150-1000 p.s.i.g., 2-300 seconds and hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 3-25:1 or catalytically at 800-1100 DEG F., 150-1000 p.s.i.g., 0.2-10 vol./vol./hr. and hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 5-25:1 over a desulphurization catalyst, e.g. cobalt molybdate or molybdenum disulphide on aluminia, subjecting the product to a hydrocracking step in a second hydrocracker to effect dealkylation either thermally at 1100-1800 DEG F., 50-2500 p.s.i.g., 2-300 seconds and hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 3-25:1 or catalytically at 900-1200 DEG F., 150-1000 p.s.i.g., hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 5-25:1 and 0.2-5.0 vol./vol./hr., recovering benzene and naphthalene and recycling at least part of the unconverted alkylbenzenes to the second hydrocracker. Preferably gas and a C5-400 DEG F. gasoline cut are removed by fractionation from the first hydrocracker effluent and the remainder passed to the second hydrocracker direct or through an intermediate catalytic cracking zone operated in the absence of hydrogen at 100-1000 DEG F., 0-1000 p.s.i.g., in liquid or gaseous phase with a contact time of 2 seconds-5 hours in the presence of silica-alumina, activated clays, supported boron trifluoride-hydrogen fluoride or a Friedel-Crafts metal halide. Preferably such cracking is effected in the presence of recycled benzene and alkylnaphthalenes to effect transalkylation between benzene and alkyl-naphthalenes. Alkyl-benzene recycle is then added before the second hydrocracker. Suitable catalysts, if used, for the second hydrocracker are the desulphurization catalysts specified for the first hydrocracker and optionally supported chromia or molybdena.
