An apparatus for dyeing hanks of yarn comprises at least one charging carriage to move in an endless path through a dyeing station and subsequent rinsing and drying stations, a tube system arranged on the carriage and including horizontal perforated carrier tubes for suspending therefrom hanks of yarn to be dyed, the dyeing and rinsing stations including a vessel and a pump for circulating the dye and the rinsing liquors through the tube system, at least one connection piece for tube couplings on the tube system of the charging carriage and a corresponding tube coupling on the pressure conduit of the pumps for establishing detachable connections to the tube system on the charging carriage as it moves into each station so that the dye and the rinsing liquors circulated by the pumps will flow through the tube system, emerge from the perforations of the carrier tubes, flow down the hanks suspended from the carrier tubes, collect at the bottom of the vessel and be re-supplied to the tube system by the pump. In the embodiment shown a charging carriage 1 provided with carrier tubes 2 from which hanks 3 are suspended is provided with wheels 4 adapted to run in rails 5. After loading with hanks 3 at charging and removing station D the carriage 1 is swung by means of carriage 6 to the front of container 7 at dyeing station A. After a rolling door 9 has been opened the carriage 1 is pushed into container 7 by pneumatic feeder 8. The carriage has two connection pieces 15 for coupling to pressure conduit 16 of circulating pump 17 the suction side of which is connected to a troughlike bottom 19 of container 7. Dye liquor is supplied in a measured quantity from tank 20 to tank 21 and mixed therein with water from supply 22 and fed to container 7 via valve 23. After doors 9 have closed pump 17 is started and dye liquor pumped through perforated carrier tubes 2 and over hanks 3. The dye liquor can be heated by steam through socket 25 and/or by heat exchanger 26. After termination of the dyeing operation, doors 9 are opened and the carriage 1 is moved to the rinsing station B by means of a new carriage being introduced into A. The rinsing station B comprises an open tub 30 supplied with various rinses through control valve 35. Rinsing pump 32 has its suction side connected to the lowest point of tub 30 and its output can again be coupled to the tube system of carriage 1 through connection pieces 15 to rinse the hanks 3. Water is removed from the hanks 3 by means of a vertically movable device comprising mat-like rubber bags 39 suspended from frame 38. The frame can be lowered through a pneumatic drive in such manner that one rubber bag will be located between two hanks. Compressed air is then introduced into the bags 39 so that they expand and press against the hanks so as to squeeze water therefrom. Subsequent to this operation the carriage 1 is transferred to a drying station C 1 where the hanks are dried by hot air circulated by fans 42. The carriage 1 may then be moved on to a second swingable carriage 6a which swings the carriage 1 to, in front of a second drying station C 2 a pneumatic pusher 44 pushing the carriage 1 into the drying chamber. When drying is completed carriage one is moved out of station C 2 on to the swingable carriage 6 which conveys it to the removing station D. During the automatic operation of the apparatus a charging carriage will be present at each station. In a further embodiment two dyeing stations are provided, a track being situated in front of them and a truck for carrying the charging carriage being mounted on the track.
