Abstract

1,015,669. Trays or like containers. JOHN WADDINGTON Ltd. April 15, 1964 [March 25, 1963], No. 11640/63. Headings B8D and B8P. [Also in Division A2] A tray of plastics material such as polystyrene for meat &c. has in the base and/or sides a multiplicity of capillary recesses capable of holding liquids out of contact with the meat &c. The tray or container is of dished form and of rectangular shape, the top of the walls being outwardly disposed to form flanges 1 with an inverted groove 2 between them. Each wall contains a number of hollow ribs 3 of substantially semicircular cross-section, each rib merging at its upper end into the corresponding wall whilst the opposite end merges into the base of the tray at a predetermined distance from the juncture of the wall with the base. The multiplicity of capillary recesses 4 formed in the base comprise substantially hemispherical depressions whose upper ends are slightly rounded to provide a honeycomb patterned series of boundary walls 5 which form a multiplicity of peaks 6. These peaks minimize the area of contact of the tray with its contents and allow air circulation. The capillary recesses 4 retain any liquids which separate from the contents, even when the tray is inverted. Other embodiments (not shown) may contain moulded partitions which may or may not themselves contain capillary recesses, or may be made of laminated plastics. In a further embodiment a small percentage of the cavities may be opened towards their base, which will allow'liquid exceeding the height of the capillary to escape. Such trays can be used for horizontal purposes.
