[Also in Division A2] In a machine for producing a wrapped tobacco rod 10 employing a trimming knife 4 to remove excess from a main tobacco stream and a roller 6 to compress it, both the trimming level and the degree of compression are varied in response to the output of an unspecified measuring device 11 situated anywhere after (or alternatively, before) the trimmer. Both the trimmer and the roller are adjusted by cams driven from a control box 13. It is stated that this control may either drive both cams in response to signals from device 11, or the signals may be used to control one cam only (either one), in which case the other is operated only when the first reaches the end of its optimum operating range. The second cam may then move an amount which causes the first cam to be driven to the opposite end of its operating range. Limit switches may be operated by the trimmer control mechanism. Tobacco from a distributor 1 is carried to a grooved wheel 3 by a belt 2; the wheel carries the tobacco by suction and/or by pressure from a belt, which may be the belt 2 carried partly round the wheel's periphery. Gross inequalities are removed by a rotating brush 37. The excess tobacco is returned to the belt 2 by a second wheel 5. The roller 6 is driven at the speed of the tobacco stream and the trimmer 4 may comprise a rotating cutter. Specification 1,013,492 is referred to.
