Abstract
1,011,525. Discharge lamps. ENGELHARD HANOVIA Inc. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 11, 1961], No. 30855/62. Heading H1D. A lead-in conductor to an electrode 7 of a discharge lamp having a fused quartz envelope 2 containing a filling of xenon or xenon and mercury comprises first and second portions 5 and 6 of substantially equal cross-sectional areas, the first portion 5 being made of a material having higher thermal and electrical conductivity than the second portion 6, whereby in operation the second portion has a steeper temperature gradient than the first. Suitable materials are tungsten and tantalum respectively. Conductor portion 5 is coated with a layer 8 of a glass having a coefficient of expansion approximately the same as that of the material of the conductor. Additional glass layers 9 and 10 may be provided. An electrode of equal size is provided at the other end of the envelope 2 for A.C. operation, or an electrode of different size for D.C. operation.
