Abstract

1,009,799. Upholstery. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1964, No. 41258/64. Heading A4M. A cover assembly for a seat comprises two layers 1, 2, e.g. of foamed polyvinyl chloride, and a fastener, e.g. stud 5, having a shank 5a projecting through the inner layer 1 and a head 5b located in a pocket formed between the layers 1, 2 by bending A these layers adjacent the head 5b. The inner layer 1 is on a linen base and the outer layer 2 is covered by a sheet 3 of expanded polyvinyl chloride on a woven base. Foamed polyether pads 4 are sandwiched between the layers 1, 2. The stud shank 5a is barbed to receive a clamping washer 10 or a press fit after being passed through seat padding 7 and canvas 6 layers supported on metal springs 8 mounted on a metal frame 9. Alternatively, the stud shank may be unbarbed and split to facilitate clamping by outwardly bending the split portions. In a preferred method of manufacturing the cover assembly, the layers 1, 2 are bonded A around the stud 5 by being clamped by electrodes and subjected to high frequency dielectric heating.
