Abstract

Vitamin B12 is obtained from an alkaline saline suspension of micro-organism cells obtained during the fomentation of a Vitamin B12 producing micro-organism by heating the suspension, separating the spent cells, treating the resulting aqueous solution with CaO to precipitate impurities, filtering, adding tannic acid to the filtrate to precipitate a Vitamin B12 tannic acid complex and recovering the Vitamin B12 preferably by ion exchange or chromatography. In an example, a salt suspension obtained according to the method of Specification 1,007,972 was heated to 100-120 DEG C. for 10 minutes. The mixture was then extracted with acetone and treated with CaO. After filtering, tannic acid was added to the solution and the resulting precipitate was dissolved in acetic acid and purified by chromatography on alumina.
