Abstract

[Also in Division A2] A method of freeze-drying a product such as vaccines comprises the steps of evacuating a chamber 10 by means of a pump 15, introducing dry argon from a cylinder 20 through a desiccant and a dry air filter 22, 23 respectively into the chamber where it is rapidly cooled by contact with refrigerated shelves 11, opening a door 10a and charging vials 25 containing the frozen product into the chamber, closing the door and evacuating the chamber, the temperature of the refrigerant then being adjusted to sublimate the water in the vials, and again filling the chamber with dry argon. It is stated that the water content of the dried product is thus kept below 1% by weight. The vials are then removed, the product being meanwhile protected since argon is heavier than air, and stoppered.
