Abstract

In order to increase the area of contact between a piston and a cylinder in the plane of lateral thrust while maintaining the required clearance between them in the region of the gudgeon-pin bosses, the piston skirt has in cross-section a shape 2 which differs from the conventional oval shape 1 in the manner shown in Figs. A and B. The contact surface of the piston skirt may be broader on the thrust side 4 than on the non-thrust side 3.
