Abstract

109,857. Hallimond, A. F., and Fletcher, W. G. Oct. 14, 1916. Magnetic separators.-The material to be treated is carried on a continuously moving disk, drum, or endless-belt conveyer beneath fixed magnet poles, the conveyer being formed with gaps at intervals and the magnet poles being intermittently de-energized or their fields varied or diverted when a gap in the conveyer is beneath a pole, so that the attracted material is discharged from the pole and falls through the gap in the conveyer into a receptacle beneath. In a machine having a horizontal disk conveyer B, Fig. 2, formed with gaps E, the material is supplied to the disk from a hopper either continuously, in which case that passing through the gaps is collected in a vessel F, or intermittently, the supply being automatically stopped during the passage of a gap beneath the hopper. A magnet G is de-energized automatically by means of a commutator M to allow the attracted material to fall through the gaps E into a hopper H, the unattracted material being swept by a brush J into a hopper K. In a machine having a drum conveyer B, Fig. 5, the material released from the magnet G falls into pockets U by which it is carried round to a receptacle Q, while unattracted material falls off the drum into a receptacle K. The machine may be immersed in water up to the level XY. A machine with an endless-belt conveyer may be so arranged that gaps in the upper and lower flights of the conveyer pass under a pole simultaneously. The magnets, instead of being de-energized, may have their fields varied or diverted by iron masses in suitable positions. When magnets having two pole-pieces are used, the discharge of the material therefrom may be assisted by an arm moving between them, operated by magnetic or mechanical means.
