Abstract
109,825. Yates, A. Sept. 12, 1916. Knitting head coverings.-Comprises knitted head coverings having a crown which is shaped by one or more seamless contractions. Blanks are formed by knitting, preferably on a circular machine, a length of fabric and forming contractions at intervals on opposite sides or edges by the narrowing and widening process. The contractions may extend wholly or partly across the fabric. Fig. 1 shows a blank comprising four section of fabric d, e, f, g, united by seamless contractions a, b, c, and Fig. 3, a hat formed therefrom by folding in the sections d, g. Fig. 4 shows a similar article in which the contractions i extend only partly across the fabric and in which a part j is turned up to form a hat of the sou-wester type. Fig. 5 shows a tam-o-shanter formed from a flat blank j united to a head band k. By reducing the contractions, a hat of the turbant style is produced, and by turning up the brim, a polo cap may be formed. Fig. 7 shows a hood formed of three sections m, n, o, and Fig. 0 a helmet formed from tubular fabric q with contractions r. The blanks may be knitted into a continuous string which is subsequently cut up. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1268/80, 1262/82, and 17268/03.
