Abstract

A sampling device for introducing a sample of liquid into a carrier gas, such as for chromatographic analysis, comprises a valve having a body 2 and a slide 1 and provided with passages 11 to 17 and cavities 22, 23, 25, 26 respectively, the passages and cavities, when placed in communication, forming three chambers through which fluid can flow. When the valve is in the position shown, a solvent is continuously fed through passage 11, cavity 22 and passage 17 to a solvent receiver, the liquid to be sampled is continuously fed through passage 16, cavity 25 and passage 15, and a carrier gas such as helium, is continuously fed through passage 12, cavity 23, passage 13, cavity 26 and passage 14. Upon moving the slide into its alternative position (Fig. 2), the solvent flows through a cavity 21, and the liquid to be sampled through a cavity 24. The pressure of the carrier gas then forces the solvent in the cavity 22 into the cavity 25, thereby forcing the liquid in the latter cavity into the main carrier gas stream so as to be fed to e.g. a chromatographic column. The solvent from the cavity 22 on transfer to the cavity 25 dissolves any liquid remaining therein. The body may be of stainless steel and the slide of P.T.F.E.
