Apparatus for delivering a measured quantity of powdered material into a container 149 comprises a measuring chamber 75 and a gaseous pressure filling mechanism 18, the measuring chamber including wall sections 76, 77 having porous portions 82 and separated by resilient members 83, the wall section 77 being movable in order to reduce the volume of the chamber. The wall sections 76, 77 are formed with ribs 81 against which porous liners 82 are held, thereby leaving an annular space 80 into which compressed air can flow. The wall section 76 is rigidly fixed to side plates 92 and the section 77 is connected to a rod 113 which is actuated by a diaphragm 114 so as to move the section 77 between the plates against the action of the resilient members 83; the maximum outward movement of the latter section may be varied by changing shims 121, thereby altering the capacity of the measuring chamber. The measuring chamber is sealingly secured to an inlet valve housing provided at the bottom of a magazine 18 into which powdered material is fed from a hopper 15, Fig. 1, by means of a blowing head 14. The magazine is provided with flexible liner 21 which is vibrated by means of pusher plates 36 connected, via a yoke 41 and rod 47, to a motor-driven eccentric plate 46. The bottom of the measuring chamber is closed by a spring-loaded valve plate 125 pivoted on a pin 128; the valve may be urged into contact with the bottom of the chamber by means of a clamping device or, as shown, by means of a container 149 mounted on a table which can be raised via a piston-and-cylinder device 145. In operation, the table is raised so as to close the valve plate 125 and an inlet valve 54 is closed as shown. The blower and yoke mechanism are then actuated so as to keep the material in the magazine in a fluent condition. Upon rotating the valve 54 so as to bring a bore 61 therein into alignment with the outlet from the magazine, the material is forced by compressed air into the measuring chamber, the air then escaping to atmosphere via the porous liners 82, a porous plate 65 and pipes 80<SP>1</SP>. The valve 54 is then closed and air fed, via a pipe 118, into a housing 116 to act on the diaphragm 114 and so move the wall section 77 of the measuring chamber. The material in the chamber is thereby compressed into a slug so that when the valve 125 is opened the slug of material falls into the container; air may be fed through the pipes 80<SP>1</SP> and porous liners to facilitate the delivery of the slug.
