Abstract

1,095,951. Furnace grates. HUDSON & WEST PTY. Ltd., and HODGKINSON BENNIS Ltd. Dec. 29, 1965, No. 55135/65. Heading F4B. In a mechanical stoker, fuel 11 from hopper 10 is supplied by means of a reciprocating ram 13 on to the ignition area 15 of the grate, said grate comprising movable metal firebars 16 and 17 arranged alternatively, the lower end of each firebar resting on a fixed bearer 23. A substantially linear longitudinal movement is imparted to each of firebars 17 by means of a lever mechanism responding to movements of shaft 27. A lifting movement is imparted to firebars 16 by individual cams 26 provided on shaft 27, the lower end of each firebar 16 being held in position by an integral lug 28 resting on bearer 23. A pneumatic cylinder 43 s used to activate shaft 27. This combined ifting and sliding movement of alternate rebars serves to advance the fuel along the grate and to prevent caking of the fuel. The fuel feeding ram 13 is oscillated by means of a second pneumatic cylinder (41) acting on shaft 39 which contains an integral lug 38. A forced draught is introduced under the firebars, with the heat of combustion passing through the furnace front 22 and solid combustion products into ashpit 18.
