Abstract
109,452. Basset, L. P. Sept. 7, 1916, [Convention date]. Extracting; blast, composition of.-In a blastfurnace process for reducing iron and other ores in which finely-divided carbon is injected into the lower part of the furnace along with the air for combustion, the proportions of carbon and air are such that carbon monoxide only is produced, an unburnt fraction of carbon being in some cases left to react with the ore along with the carbon monoxide. The charge of ore is mixed with the necessary fluxes only, or with a small addition of carbon. In the case of iron ores, the proportions may be such that wrought iron, cast iron, or steel is produced. In the apparatus shown, finely divided carbon from a hopper e is passed by a conveyer d and pipe c to an air-supply tuyere a at the bottom of the blast furnace b. The hopper e may be closed and connected by pressureequalizing means with the tuyere a. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the apparatus comprises also a second set of the parts c, d, e, connected to the tuyere a. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
