Abstract
A polymer mixture is obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride in aqueous suspension to obtain polymer granules having a plasticizer absorbing capacity of at least 15 grams per 100 grams of polymer, removing excess monomer, adding for each 100 parts by weight of polymer (a) 3-8 parts of (meth)acrylonitrile or a (meth)acrylate of a C1-C4 alcohol; (b) 2-6 parts of a vinyl aromatic monomer; and (c) 3-8 parts of a diolefine and polymerizing with a monomer soluble catalyst. The vinyl chloride is preferably polymerized using as dispersing agent (i) a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and an acrylate of a C6 + alcohol; (ii) polyvinyl alcohol mixed with a polyoxyalkylene glycolpolyamine condensate; (iii) partially esterified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer; or (iv) partially hydrolysed polyvinylacetate with a low degree of hydrolysis. Catalyst in each stage may be lauroyl peroxide, acetylcyclohexylsulphonyl peroxide or diisopropylperoxidicarbonate. Monomer (a) may be ethyl acrylate or methyl or butyl methacrylate; (b) may be styrene, alpha-methyl- or chloro-styrene, p-chlorostyrene or 2,5-dichlorostyrene, and (c) may be butadiene, chloroprene or isoprene.
