Abstract
Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1091695/C2/1> where either R1 and R2 are both isovaleroyloxy and the 5-6 position is saturated, or one of R/R2 is isovaleroyloxy and the other is b -acetoxy-isovaleroyloxy and the 5-6 position is as shown, are extracted from roots and rhizomes of plants of the species Valerianaceae, by using lipophilic solvents below 30 DEG C., and in the presence of 2-6 C aliphatic carboxylic acids (hereafter referred to as "acids"), in the pH range 3-7. The concentrated extracts are dissolved in acids, and fats, oils and higher hydrocarbons removed with the lipophilic solvents. After gradual dilution with water the required novel compounds are extracted from the acid solution using the lipophilic solvents, and are isolated by crystallization or chromatography using Al2O3 which has been partially deactivated by treatment with acids. IR and NMR spectra (not shown) are given for each novel compound.
