Abstract

1,091,349. Adjustable beds. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. July 13, 1965 [July 20, 1964], No. 29723/65. Heading A4J. An adjustable bed comprises a movable frame 22 pivotally connected by links 30, 31 to a fixed frame 21. Links 30, 31 have upper extensions 36 pivotally connected by a link 32 which may be moved linearly to pivot the links 30, 31 and thus move the frame 22 substantially parallelly with respect to the frame 21. Link 32 is moved to the right, Fig. 4, by means of a cable 48 which is attached to a pin 49 slidable in slots 44. Pin 49 is attached to a shaft 58 and is moved to the right by rotating a crank 55. This causes links 30, 31 to rotate clockwise about shafts 33, 35 and thus raise movable frame 22. Frame 22 is lowered by rotating crank 55 in the opposite direction to urge shaft 58 to the left and to allow pin 49 to move in slots 44 under the force provided by the weight of the frame 22. In a modification shown in Fig. 6 an elevation drive motor 99 rotates screw 100 so that a nut and guide pin link 106, 105 are urged to the right along slots (104), Fig. 7 (not shown). Consequently link 107 conected to plates 97 on link 32 will pivot links 30, 31 clockwise about shafts 33, (35) to elevate frame 22. Frame 22 is lowered by actuating motor 99 in the lowering rotational direction so that the nut and guide pin link 106, 105 are urged to the left along slots (104).
