Abstract
1,091,163. Refractory bricks. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. July 20, 1965, No. 30854/65. Heading F4B. Expansion allowance means for insertion between refractory bricks &c. wherein an inner or hot face expansion means 12, e.g. cardboard, permits an expansion equal to the thermal expansion of the refractory brick 11 when heated to its operating temperature and an outer or cold face expansion means 13, e.g. asbestos, permits an expansion of between 50 and 90% of the thermal expansion of the brick when heated to its operating temperature. The outer expansion means only being operative above 500‹ C. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) comprises a steel plate Y having embossed or raised portions Z, Z<SP>1</SP> adjacent inner and outer ends of the refractory brick 11, the height of the embossed portions supplies the required expansion allowances. An allowance for the expansion and oxidation of the plate is made in calculating the height of the embossed portions. The bricks are applied to a furnace arch, particularly a self-supporting arch.
