Abstract
1,089,375. Coating processes. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 3, 1964 [Nov. 22, 1963], No. 36080/64. Heading B2K. [Also in Division H1] In an electric cable having a conductor core 52 and a metallic shield 55 a plastics jacket 53 or 57 is securely bonded to at least one of the surfaces of the metallic shield through an intermediate boundary layer 54 or 56 of a thermoplastic polymer of a major proportion by weight of ethylene and a minor proportion of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, the bond being substantially co-extensive with the common surface of contact of the shield and jacket. The bond is made by applying the copolymer of ethylene and unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as acrylic acid to both sides of the shield 55 formed by a longitudinally folded copper or aluminium tape and extruding onto it an outer sheathing 57, e.g. cf polyethylene. In this way bonds are obtained at 56 and/or 54. The submarine cable shown has a tensile steel core 51. The metal parts can be coated with the adhesive polymer by melt extrusion, powder spraying or by passing the heated part through a fluidized polymer powder bed, casting from a solvent solution, or fusion of a thin solid film of the polymer on the part. The invention can be applied to various types of power or communication cables (Figs. 1-4 not shown) including cables with coducting plastics sheathing (Fig. 6, not shown), the conducting material being acetylene black. Various examples of carboxylic acid are given and the adhesive polymer may be a random copolymer of ethylene.
