Abstract
A process for calcining gypsum, as described in the parent Specification 1,018,464, in which a layer of powdered gypsum only sufficient to cover the bottom of the calcination vessel is calcined whereupon further powdered gypsum is continuously added at the upper end of the vessel to cause calcined gypsum to be discharged through a rising conduit in communication with the lower end of the vessel by the pressure of the head of material in the vessel. The temperature of the vessel is maintained constant during the continuous addition of gypsum, e.g. by controlling the rate of addition of powdered gypsum. The vessel may be heated whilst the initial layer is being introduced. The initial layer may be sufficient to seal off the lower end of the rising conduit.
