Abstract

The invention comprises 2-trichloromethyl-benzoxazoles of the formula <FORM:1087101/C2/1> where X represents at least one substituent selected from halogen, nitro, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, carboxy, carbalkoxy, and alkyl groups optionally substituted by halogen or alkoxy and aryl groups optionally substituted by halogen, nitro, alkyl and alkoxy. The compounds may be prepared by a variety of methods (1) reacting the appropriate o-amino phenol with chloral and oxidizing the resultant Schiff's base with lead tetra-acetate, (2) electrophilic substitution of the parent benzoxazole to introduce X, e.g. chlorination, nitration, (3) condensing the appropriate o-aminophenol is trichloroacetonitrile or (4) reacting the o-aminophenol with an alkyl trichloromethylacetimidate. Numerous compounds are specified. The benzoxazoles are used as brocidal agents, e.g. herbicides, fungicides (see Division A5).ALSO:Biocidal compositions comprise one or more benzoxazoles of the formula <FORM:1087101/A5-A6/1> wherein X represents at least one substituent selected from halogen, nitro, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, carboxy, carbalkoxy, alkyl substituted by halogen or alkoxy and aryl substituted by halogen, nitro, alkyl or alkoxy, in association with a carrier. The compositions find particular use as herbicides and fungicides and may be in the form of dusts, solutions, water-dispersible powder concentrates or water-emulsifiable liquid concentrates and include surface active agents. As herbicides the compositions can be applied to pre- or post-emergent vegetation and, as fungicides, to the soil. Examples describe the application of 2-trichloromethyl-5-chlorobenzoxazole as a herbicide and a fungicide.
