Abstract

A primary explosive composition, of increased resistance to electrostatic ignition, comprises crystalline particles of a primary explosive having finely divided boron dispersed within the individual particles. The primary explosive may be normal lead styphnate, basic lead styphnate, normal lead 2,4-dinitroresorcinate, normal lead trinitrophloroglucinate, or barium styphnate. The presence of boron also serves to increase the explosive power of barium styphnate and increase the stab and percussion sensitivity of normal lead 2,4-dinitroresorcinate and lead styphnate. Reference is also made to lead azide as the primary explosive. In examples, lead styphnate, lead 2,4-dinitroresorcinate, and barium styphnate are precipitated by double decomposition from aqueous solutions in which finely divided boron is suspended.
