Abstract
1,086,640. Piezoelectric crystal mountings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 16, 1965 [Dec. 16, 1963], No. 49658/63. Heading H1E. Also in Division H4] A backing for a piezo-electric crystal comprises a bundle of parallel wires of e.g. copper or tungsten embedded in a thermosetting or thermoplastic material. The wires may extend normally to the crystal and may make contact with an electrode thereby providing an electrical connection. To prevent reflection of mechanical energy in the backing, the wires may be splayed out, tapered (e.g. by rolling) or cut to different lengths and arranged systematically or randomly. The wires may be coated with a high-strength plastic material and clamped together at the end adjacent the crystal. The other end of the bundle may then be splayed and filled with a material giving high attenuation e.g. plastic material filled with tungsten powder. The plastic coating on the wires may be tapered in thickness towards the end of the bundle.
