Abstract

1,084,977. Burning sludge. HANIEL & LUEG G.m.b.H. Nov. 27, 1964 [Nov. 30, 1963], No. 48357/64. Heading F4B. A furnace for burning sludge or like waste comprises a combustion chamber 4 with burner 18, a base of sand 2 through which is blown preheated air by a fan 9 and on to which the sludge is dropped from a pipe 8. The sludge is dried by the heated sand and burns in chamber 4, the hot combustion gases so formed permeate through a bed of sand 5 above the combustion chamber 4 and heat up this sand which then falls through pipe 15 to the bed 2, sand being taken from this bed 2 and transferred to bed 5 via conduits 11, 12, 14, aided by air from the blower 9. The combustion gases having given off most of their heat are cool enough to pass directly into a dirt trap prior to release to the atmosphere. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a further bed of sand 21 beneath the bed 2 which heats the air passing through bed 2 has hot sand delivery from bed 2 via feed 19 and cool sand extracted via conduit 22 for delivery to bed 5.
