Abstract

Density separators.-Relates to a separating- machine of the kind in which the grains of different masses are subjected to the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and a current of water acting in opposite directions. A conical member 8 secured to a shaft 4, and provided with vanes 9, 10, rotates in a fixed vessel 3 to which water charged with the substances to be sorted is led by a pipe 14, and which has a discharge pipe 15 at its lower end. The vanes 10 may be connected together by a disk 11 provided with a series of apertures which coincide as regards position with discharge apertures 12 in the vessel 3 leading to a settling chamber 13. Suction is produced in this chamber by a pipe 16 leading from the discharge pipe 15 and may be regulated by a tap 17. The lower end of the member 8 is so formed that, at the constricted passage round the outer edge thereof, the flow of water preponderates while towards the centre the centrifugal force predominates. The neutral zone where grains of the mass for which the velocity of rotation is adjusted are in equilibrium is in the neighbourhood of the diecharge openings 12. Liquid is pumped from a trough 20, in which the level is constant or controlled, to a hopper 25 into which the substances to be sorted are discharged by a distributor 26. The water emerging from the apparatus may be discharged into the trough 20 or into a drain, in which case the trough is fed with fresh water. Several of the separators may be arranged in series.
