In order to mix the bristles B, B<SP>1</SP> in constant proportions in each bristle tuft, slot 76 in picker bar 22 is adjusted to gather, at different depths, sequentially from magazines 14 and 16, during each feed stroke towards tufting tool 28. The effective depth of slot 76 is limited, beneath magazine 14, by stationary vertically adjustable stock fingers 21 and, beneath magazine 16, by the position of stock bars 20. During tuft insertion, for example, of different lengths and thicknesses of bristles in a toothbrush stock I, the bars 20 are raised, by pivoting lever 90 anticlockwise about its pivot 98, to allow picker bar 22 to make its return stroke without gathering bristles from magazine 16. During the feed stroke of picker bar 22, bars 20 are lowered to a position determined by the spring-urged contact of arm 102 with the end of adjustable bolt 115. During the passage of notch 76 under the partition 18, the bristles B are packed down on to the bars 20 by the trailing end of resilient urged stripper member C. In another form (Figs. 7-9, not shown), bars 20 are replaced by a fixed rail (120<SP>1</SP>) and a vertically movable rail (120) extending below magazine 16. Rail (120) is carried by the armature of a solenoid responsive to a cam-operated switch.
