Abstract

A work clamping device for a machine having a circular saw which rotates about a horizontal axis and the plane of which is adjustable about a vertical axis for making transverse or mitre cuts in a workpiece comprises a gripping member 26 movable towards and away from a fixed gripping member 28, the members each having a respective contact piece 40 movable relative thereto in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the movable gripping member and means for securing each contact piece on its respective gripping member. The saw 12 is mounted in a turntable 14a rotatable about a vertical axis in a holder 14 vertically movable by a feed lever 18 on ways 16 on a member 10 carried by a bracket 10 of a base 22. As described, the work-table 24 on the base 22 has a pair of normally fixed gripping members (28, Figs. 3 and 4) which are normally secured by bolts (68) to the work-table but are connected to a yoke (60) engaged by a threaded spindle (64) whereby they can be adjusted when the bolts (68) are removed. The movable gripping members (26) are secured to rods (30) slidable in blocks (34) which are mounted on the table (24) and receive threaded spindles (36) connected to the members (26). Each member 26, 28 consists of two parts (26a, 26b, Fig. 5) which between them define a dovetail-shaped groove (44) for a male guide (42) on a contact piece (40). The contact piece is adjustable along the gripping member and is clampable in position by a screw (54) arranged to urge the parts of the gripping member against the guide (42). The contact pieces can be positioned for effecting transverse cuts with the saw 12 or for effecting mitre cuts. In other embodiments two pairs of gripping members are arranged on each side of the saw and each contact piece may be mounted in two gripping members.
