Abstract

1,075,604. Printing-apparatus. SOC. ANON. DES PUBLICATIONS PERIODIQUES IMPRIMERIEE DESFOSSES - NEOGRAVURE. March 8, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 9660/65. Heading B6C. An intaglio printing machine comprises a cylinder 1 supporting an engraved plate 2, a plurality of inking rollers 3 adapted to apply intaglio printing ink to only part of the engraved design, a wiping cylinder 5, and a supplementary inking roller 11 arranged to supply a relief printing ink to at least the portions of the plate surface adjoining the part of the engraved design which has not been inked. The inked plate prints on sheets which are fed to an impression roller 8 by a device 9. The inks may be of different colours. The surfaces of the rollers 3 are cut-away so that they only supply ink to the selected part of the engraved design and the surface of the roller 11 is similarly constructed so that relief ink is supplied either solely to the areas surrounding the empty design, Fig. 2 (not shown), or to the areas surrounding the empty design and the inked design, Fig. 3 (not shown). The resultant print is in two parts; part of the design being in intaglio ink and part being in negative surrounded by relief ink, Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown). The cylinder 5 is provided with a coating of polytetrafluoroethylene which is engaged by a brush 6 and a scraper 7. The plate 2 may alternatively be mounted on a flat bed. The roller 11 may be provided with a layer (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a soft substance adapted to apply inked numbers or symbols from dies (22) on to the image areas devoid of intaglio ink. The plate 2 may alternatively be inked by rods or strips.
