Abstract

A granular fertilizer comprising ammonium nitrate and monoammonium phosphate having an N : P2O5 ration of 0.64-2.1 and a water content less than W% where W is 2 + 4N : P2O5 is continuously formed from a melt which is maintained by the continuous addition of further ingredients. A melt of ammonium nitrate having a water content of 0-15% may be first formed and monoammonium phosphate added to it. Alternatively, a mixture comprising ammonium nitrate, monoammonium phosphate, and nitric and/or phosphoric acid having a pH below 3 may be first formed and then ammoniated to form a melt having a pH of 4. The further ammonium nitrate may be added as a hot concentrated solution containing 0-15% of water. The further monoammonium phosphate may be added as a powder or as a solution or slurry. Ammonia and sulphuric acid may be added together with the ammonium nitrate and monoammonium phosphate to form up to 20% of ammonium sulphate based on the melt. Up to 10% of diammonium phosphate may be included with the monoammonium phosphate. The temperature of the melt may be maintained at 140-164 DEG C. The water content of the melt is preferably maintained below 4% and may be reduced by boiling or passage of air. Potassium chloride, potassium sulphate, superphosphate, and trace elements may also be included in the melt. Granulation of the melt may be effected by spraying into a gaseous cooling medium; discharging on to a drum or belt cooler, removing as flake and breaking up in a disintegrator; or by spraying on to potassium chloride in a rotary granulator.
